How to paint the room ?
We will try to answer this question from the professional point. We have been in this industry for the last 20 years, so we have worked on many different projects in different situations. We have watched how the paints have lasted over the years a tried new paints as they developed. Now we want to share this to make your lives easier.
Colours
You probably have chosen the colour you want, but in case you have not, then please read further.
ALWAYS try the testers and don’t trust the little colour charts. You should always get some tester pots and try in different areas of the room. In the direct sunlight, in the shade, higher up and lower down. You will be surprised how different it might look. Test it in daylight and under the artificial lighting. And remember, there are so many shades of grey or green, or blue, or yellow. Don’t just go with the flow, but make it personal.
Preparation
If you have the furniture and flooring to protect, then PROTECT them. It will be too late if you get those covered in paint. Use dust sheets, plastic sheets, carpet or wooden floor protection and loads of masking tape.
Tape up your sockets and switches, door handles, etc.
Remember, it’s easier to remove the masking tape, than remove the paint from the surfaces you did not want to paint.
Filling
Any imperfections to ceilings, walls or woodwork, need to be made good. Just like the dentist does it to your teeth… Filler, when used correctly, can change the final result massively. Don’t forget about drying times and don’t try to speed things up.Work you way down. Starting with the ceilings, then walls, then woodwork.
When filling is done, it’s time for sanding it. Use different grades of sand paper and finish of with the finer ones for the best result.
Use the vacuum cleaner!!!
Painting
Use the paint brush to do the cutting in and as mentioned earlier, start from the ceiling and work your way down.
Do the cutting in to the ceiling, the use the roller for wider areas. Wait for it to dry and only then start with the walls.
Use one thinned down coat of paint as the mist coat to walls and ceilings. Then apply 2 or 3 more coats of standard wall or ceiling paint.
Again, use the paint brush to do the cutting in, and then roller for wider areas.
Wait for it to DRY.
Now it time for your woodwork. Edges of the floors should be protected using the masking tape. Use the paint brush and apply 1 coat of primer/undercoat followed by 2 coats of eggshell/satinwood/gloss.
Wait for it to DRY.
Remove masking tapes and clean up.
